So What Happened with the Buffed Banksy Piece?
Aaahhh, Banksy. He’s here! In New York! Quick! Everyone who’s ever seen a copy of his book at Urban Outfitters and was moved by it, comment on how excited you are at this great artist gracing our city with his political murals!
Yesterday his awaited first piece went up…and was buffed. People over on Gothamist have been reporting everything. Jake Dobkin–Gothamist Kingpin stated “The goal of this coverage is to blow up Banksy’s spots as quickly as possible so local graffiti artists can go tag them.” Why? Because graffiti wars and also this is New York baby, so that’s why.
So yes, the first piece has already been buffed in a day. In the article about the buffing comments section, people exclaimed “How could they? Don’t they know THIS IS ART??” I don’t think they understand there’s a chance Banksy himself who buffed it.
Also…this is street art.
Before the piece was buffed, Smart Crew replaced the original sign with “Graffiti is Crime” with a sign that read “Street Art is a Crime” and their logo. Smart Crew got jokes, yo. But it seems like maybe Banksy didn’t find them funny.
And now this is up.

Things are gonna get interesting.
