The Weirdness of Happy Birthday Facebook Posts
So about a month ago I turned 26. Whoo hoo! Go me! I made it another year!
Of course, me being on social media and all, a slew of “Happy B-day Cat!” notes were posted all over my Facebook wall from people I’m close with and not-so-close-with alike. Some had personal messages, some photos attached, some just said “Happy Birthday!!!”
So what did I do later that night? Why, I wrote the obligatory “Thank you for your kind bday wishes everyone, I’m so lucky to have so many wonderful people in my life!!!” status update. And I meant it. I really did. It’s nice to feel that much love one day a year.
And then got to thinking that the birthday wall extravaganza is the perfect example of just why Facebook has become so popular by indulging our egos. Post a selfie? Look how many people “liked” it affirming how great you look! Status update? People replied and that means they really get you and everything you say! Birthday? Don’t worry–Facebook is right there, making sure everyone is there to remember to love you that day, no matter where they are in the world! It’s amazing how one website has made coordinating every aspect of our social lives so simple.
But of course, then we must ask…is it real? Do these people really want me to have an awesome birthday? Well, not being a cynic right now, I think they do. Just because Facebook makes wishing someone a happy birthday easier on us all, it doesn’t necessarily devalue the spirit behind it. That’s the beauty of the internet.
But still, don’t forget after all this that Facebook is nice, but it isn’t everything. Nothing beats an actual phone call, text message, or note when showing someone you love them from afar.
And this goes for more than just birthdays.
